This past year was challenging and full of uncertainty. It was also full of so much good work and such a strong sense of connection and community. I’m grateful for all the ways individuals and organizations have supported, participated in, and shared our efforts to get people all over the state (and beyond) thinking, talking, and wondering together. We walked strongly through 2025 thanks to so many donors and foundation partners and the care they showed for our programs, our publications, our organization, and the people who work here. Below, our staff members reflect on some of the good work we were able to accomplish, and we share details about the challenging context we—and so many of our peer cultural organizations—still find ourselves navigating.
The context for our work shifted dramatically in April 2025 when the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) abruptly terminated our standard operating grant. This annual funding has been our largest and most flexible form of support since our founding fifty-four years ago. Over the weeks that followed this alarming development, our board and staff adjusted, making difficult decisions to lay off staff members, cut staff hours, and pause or cancel several programs, including our Public Program Grants. We revised our budget to prepare for multiple scenarios, established co-tenancy with another nonprofit in our Portland office space, and jointly filed a lawsuit with the Federation of State Humanities Councils against DOGE and the NEH. Through it all, we witnessed how much our work matters to people. Your advocacy, emergency grant support, and donations made an enormous difference.
Over the course of the year, Oregon Humanities continued to strengthen our operational sustainability, electing a slate of new board officers and approving a new three-year strategic framework. This new framework revolves around guiding goals and questions, and the ways our work becomes increasingly important in the face of today’s complicated and challenging trends. It states: “In response to division, we work toward cohesion; in response to polarization, we work toward mutual understanding; and in response to cultural and organizational risk, we see opportunities to think together and to build and grow.” Thank you for the opportunity to think, build, and grow with and alongside you.

Program Highlights
Oregon Humanities staff shared a few of the conversations, stories, and moments that stood out, helped them think differently, or strengthened their sense of community in 2025.
Reflective Conversations Across the Pacific
Jennifer Alkezweeny: I’m thinking about the wide range of people and places who took part in our Reflective Conversations training in 2025. We gathered people online, in Pendleton, Hillsboro, Corvallis, and Portland, and we also customized it for a variety of organizations and businesses around the state. A highlight for me this year was leading a training in Saipan for our peers at the Northern Mariana Humanities Council. It’s great to get so many folks talking and building connections in their communities in new ways around the world.
Chuck Sams on Nurturing Land and People
Alexandra Stoehr: I really enjoyed the Consider This conversation with Chuck Sams, former director of the National Park Service. Chuck’s discussion of stewardship, which encompasses far more than just responsible land management, has remained with me. When he spoke of how different the landscape might look if we embraced stewardship instead of ownership and dominance, I couldn’t help but think how this stands true for the myriad ways people and nature could be nurtured toward a more communal flourishing.
Community Storytelling Fellows Rally In Support
Ben Waterhouse: I got to work on a lot of great writing this year, but the piece that most stands out wasn’t something I edited and didn’t even appear in our pages. After Oregon Humanities’ federal funding was cut in April, one of our 2025 Community Storytelling Fellows, Meg Wade, wrote a letter about why the kind of stories that appear in Oregon Humanities’ publications matter. That letter, cosigned by most of the fellows who have ever participated in the program, appeared in Oregon Arts Watch. It was a powerful validation of the work we do at a difficult moment, and I’m grateful to Meg and the other fellows who worked on it.
“The Terror Plot” by Jamila Osman
Karina Briski: Jamila's story about a young man from Portland's Somali community who was targeted in a 2010 FBI sting operation shows the impacts of the highly-publicized events on a scale that's rarely depicted: the communal. There's so much that sticks with me from this piece, including the way Jamila uses the image of the Douglas fir tree to think about community bonds and survival. And at a time when anti-immigrant rhetoric is again being used to justify widespread harm, this story and its questions about kinship, isolation, and safety couldn't be more urgent.
Akhil Reed Amar and 100+ Students Dig Deep into the Constitution
Julia Soto: It was close to 5:30 p.m. on a weeknight and already a gaggle of high school students had gathered outside the Alberta Rose Theatre to see Akhil Reed Amar, a constitutional law scholar. Over one hundred students came early to meet with Amar and receive a copy of his 726-page book. They then sat for the main event and stayed afterward to continue their discussion with him. As if such enthusiastic engagement wasn’t enough, I heard later from a student who said, “It was a lot of fun and just plain cool to ask such a well-respected scholar my constitutional questions."
“Landlocked” by Andrea Camacho
Carolina Rios: I was so moved by Andrea's story that I couldn't stop thinking about it for a few weeks after. What stayed with me was how she carried her sense of home through the ocean, which acted as an emotional anchor for her while she began building a life here in Oregon. It reminded me that the connection to home can stay with you, no matter where you are or where you go.
Talking with Kids About Learning
Adam Davis: A clear highlight for me was our September episode of The Detour. I loved the experience of talking with so many thoughtful, funny, courageous young people at the Gilbert House Children's Museum in Salem and Grace Art Camp in Portland, I loved hearing these kids reflect on what they were learning and how they learn it, and I am continuing to love what their thinking has provoked me to keep thinking about—volcanoes, math, how to be a better person, and learning itself.
“Flowering in Tar” by Daniela Naomi Molnar
Alexandra Silvester: I had the pleasure of editing this essay, so I got to watch it grow from the seed of an idea into a lyrical meditation on climate change and what it means to be alive. In one section, Daniela writes about things that make us feel connected to the rest of the living world, like “biting into a sun-warmed tomato” or riding on public transit and feeling “buoyed by the current of civilization.” For me, reading this piece has that effect. Daniela’s words—and the words of the many writers she quotes—make me feel more attuned to both beauty and suffering.
2025 Financials
This year was unusual in ways that show up in our financial records. We weathered disruption to our federal funding from the NEH, and saw a response from our communities in emergency grants from foundations and increased individual support.
